Irish Winter Championships 2026

About This Event

The Irish Winter Championships is the national short-course (25m) championship, closing the competitive year at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. The 2026 edition is projected for 11–13 December. Short course produces fast times — the shorter pool means more turns and more underwater work — and the meet has a slightly different character to the long-course summer championships.

What to Expect

The meet is held in the 50m pool configured for 25m racing (bulkhead positioned at the halfway mark). The format is heats and finals over three days, covering the full programme of 25m events. Sessions are typically shorter than the summer nationals due to the faster race times in short course. The atmosphere is competitive but has a slightly more end-of-year feel — the training intensity of the winter season hasn't fully kicked in yet, and some swimmers use the meet as a marker rather than a taper competition. Evening finals sessions are well attended. Short-course racing is often more exciting to watch than long course: faster turnover, more lead changes, and the 25m pool feels more compact and intense. Live results and livestreaming are standard.

Who It's For

Open to Swim Ireland registered swimmers who meet the published 25m qualifying time standards. Age group, youth, and senior categories are offered. QTs are published on swimireland.ie. Swim Ireland club membership is required. The meet attracts a similar calibre of swimmer to the summer nationals, though some internationals may skip it depending on their training cycle.

Getting There

Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15 (D15 PC63). Same venue and logistics as the summer nationals — off the M50 at Junction 6, free parking, hotels in Blanchardstown. December weather means early darkness, so evening finals sessions are a full indoor experience. The Christmas period approaching means city centre accommodation can be more expensive than during the summer meets.
