The Hardman Killarney — Full Distance Triathlon
29 August 202606:30 – 23:00Lakes of Killarney, Killarney, Kerry
About This Event
The Hardman Killarney is Ireland's only non-Ironman-branded full-distance triathlon — a 3.8km lake swim, 180km cycle on the Ring of Kerry, and a full marathon through Killarney National Park. The 2026 edition on 29 August is one of the most challenging and beautiful endurance events in Europe. Where Ironman Cork offers a flat, production-heavy experience, the Hardman offers mountains, lakes, and a raw, independent character.
Recurring Event
Held annually in August/September
What to Expect
The 3.8km swim is in the Lakes of Killarney — freshwater, scenic, and cold (14–16°C in August). The 180km bike leg follows the Ring of Kerry — one of the most famous cycling routes in Ireland, with multiple mountain passes including Moll's Gap and the climb over the Black Valley. Total bike elevation is 2,500m+. The marathon runs through Killarney National Park along lakeshores, woodland trails, and country roads.
This is not a corporate Ironman production — it's an independent, community-run event with a distinctive character. The finish in Killarney town is emotional and personal. The course is unforgiving: the bike elevation alone would be a hard sportive, and you still have a marathon to run. The cut-off extends past midnight, and finishing in the dark is a real possibility.
Who It's For
For experienced ultra-endurance athletes with strong cycling ability. The 2,500m+ of climbing on the bike leg makes this significantly harder than a flat full-distance race. You should have completed at least a half-iron distance and ideally a mountainous sportive before attempting this. Open entry, 18+. No Triathlon Ireland membership required (independent event).

How to Enter

Getting There
Killarney is in Co. Kerry — about 3.5 hours from Dublin and 1.5 hours from Cork. Race HQ is in Killarney town with the swim at the Lakes of Killarney nearby. Killarney has extensive accommodation: hotels, B&Bs, hostels, and self-catering. August is peak tourist season in Kerry, so book early. The town is well-connected by rail (Dublin–Killarney, 3.5 hours) and bus.
Related Events
The Hardman Killarney runs the same weekend as Ironman Cork — athletes must choose between the two. The Hardman Waterville Half (July) is the ideal preparation race on the same Ring of Kerry roads. For a less extreme Kerry experience, the Celtic Warrior Half Warrior (August) offers a flat half-distance. The Galway Bay Swim (July) is the other marquee endurance event in the west.
