About This Event
The Irish Open Championships is the flagship meet on the Swim Ireland calendar — five days of long-course racing at the highest domestic level. For 2026, it doubles as the primary selection meet for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, making it the most consequential domestic competition of the year. Held at the Bangor Aurora Aquatics Centre in Northern Ireland, the meet attracts over 600 swimmers from 90+ clubs.

What to Expect
The format is heats in the morning and finals in the evening, with Super Finals for the marquee events. Sessions run long — expect 3–4 hours per session with two sessions per day. The atmosphere intensifies across the week as qualification battles for international teams play out in real time. The evening finals sessions have a genuine buzz, particularly on the middle days when the flagship events (100m/200m free, 200m IM) take place.
The pool is a 50m long-course setup. Electronic timing, live results, and livestreaming are standard. The venue is modern and purpose-built, though the spectator seating is modest — arrive early for finals sessions if you want a decent view. The warm-up pool is separate from the competition pool.
Who It's For
Open to all Swim Ireland registered swimmers who meet the published qualifying time standards. QTs are set at a high level — this is not a development meet. Age group swimmers (typically 14+) who have hit the times compete alongside senior internationals. Swim Ireland club membership is required. International entries from visiting clubs are accepted subject to entry criteria.

How to Enter
Entries are submitted by clubs through the Swim Ireland HY-TEK system. The entry deadline for 2026 was 25 March (strictly enforced — no late entries). Entry is by qualifying time only; check the current season's QT document on swimireland.ie. Individual swimmers cannot enter directly — your club must submit your entry. Contact competitions@swimireland.ie for queries.
Getting There
Bangor Aurora Aquatics & Leisure Centre is in Bangor, Co. Down — about 30 minutes from Belfast and roughly 2 hours from Dublin via the M1/A1. The venue has its own car park. Bangor town centre is a 10-minute walk with hotels, restaurants, and a seafront promenade. Belfast (30 min by train) has more accommodation options. Book early — the meet attracts large club contingents who block-book hotels for the week.
Related Events
The Irish Open is the culmination of the winter training season. Swimmers typically peak here and at the Summer Nationals in July. The Irish Summer National Youth & Senior Championships at the National Aquatic Centre is the next major senior meet. For age group swimmers, the Summer National Age Group Championships at UL Sport Arena (July) follow. The Irish Winter Championships (December) bookend the competitive year.
