About This Event
Ironman 70.3 Cork is Ireland's half-distance Ironman — a 1.9km sea swim, 90km bike, and 21.1km run based at Youghal on the East Cork coast. The 2026 edition is projected for 8 August. As part of the global Ironman 70.3 series, it offers qualification slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, making it the highest-profile half-distance race in Ireland.

Held annually in August
What to Expect
The swim is at Front Strand Beach in Youghal — a sandy beach with typically manageable Atlantic conditions in August. Water temperature is usually 15–17°C. Wetsuits are permitted (and almost universally worn). The bike course uses East Cork roads through rolling countryside — not flat, but without the extreme climbs of the Hardman events. The run is a mix of road and promenade along the Youghal seafront.
This is a mass-participation Ironman event: expect 1,500+ athletes, a buzzing race village, large spectator crowds, and the full Ironman production — finish line carpet, race commentary, professional photography, and the iconic "You are an Ironman" finish call. The event is well-organised to Ironman global standards, with extensive aid stations and marshalling.
Who It's For
Open to anyone aged 18+ on race day. No qualification is needed — Ironman 70.3 events are open entry. However, you should have completed at least an Olympic-distance triathlon and be confident swimming 1.9km in open sea. Training for a 70.3 typically requires 10–15 hours per week for 12–16 weeks. Cut-off times are strict: 8 hours 30 minutes overall.

How to Enter
Registration is through ironman.com. Ironman events have tiered pricing that increases as the race approaches — early registration is significantly cheaper. No Triathlon Ireland membership is required for Ironman-branded events (they operate under their own insurance). The race typically opens for registration 12+ months in advance.
Getting There
Youghal is in East Cork — about 2.5 hours from Dublin via the M8/M7 and 45 minutes from Cork city. Race HQ is at Front Strand Beach. Ironman provides detailed logistics including parking, bike check-in, and transition area information. Cork city (45 min) and Midleton (25 min) have the best accommodation options. Youghal itself has limited hotel capacity and fills up fast for Ironman weekend — book 6+ months ahead.
Related Events
Ironman 70.3 Cork runs the day before the full-distance Ironman Cork — some athletes spectate one and race the other. The Hardman Waterville Half (July) is the hilly Kerry alternative. The Celtic Warrior Half Warrior (August) at Lough Ennell offers a flatter inland 70.3-distance option. For athletes building towards Ironman 70.3, the Lough Cutra Gauntlet (May) and TriAthy Olympic (May) are solid preparation races.
