Ironman Cork — Full Distance
9 August 202606:00 – 23:59Front Strand Beach, Youghal, Cork
About This Event
Ironman Cork is Ireland's only full-distance Ironman — a 3.8km sea swim, 180km bike, and a full 42.195km marathon, based at Youghal on the East Cork coast. The 2026 edition is projected for 9 August. As part of the global Ironman series, it offers qualification slots for the Ironman World Championship in Kona/Nice, making it the ultimate endurance event on Irish soil.

Held annually in August
What to Expect
Same swim venue as the 70.3 (Front Strand Beach, Youghal) but double the distance at 3.8km — you'll be in the water for 50–80 minutes. The 180km bike course covers a wide loop through East Cork and Waterford on rolling roads. The marathon is the final test — 42.195km on tired legs, with an out-and-back run along the Youghal coast and promenade.
The day starts before dawn and the cut-off is midnight — 17 hours to complete the full distance. This is a life event, not just a race. The Ironman village, spectator experience, and finish-line atmosphere are world-class. Expect deep emotion at the finish — it's a long, hard day that pushes you to your limits.
Who It's For
Open entry for anyone aged 18+. No qualification needed, but this demands serious preparation. Most athletes train 12–20 hours per week for 6–12 months. You should have completed at least a half-iron distance before attempting a full Ironman. A strong swimming background helps enormously — the 3.8km sea swim is a significant challenge in itself.

How to Enter
Registration through ironman.com with tiered pricing. Early registration offers the best rates. No Triathlon Ireland membership required. The race typically opens 12+ months in advance. Popular and fills up — register as soon as entries open.
Getting There
Same logistics as Ironman 70.3 — Youghal, East Cork. Athletes typically arrive Thursday or Friday for bike check-in and race briefing. Cork city (45 min) is the main accommodation hub. Youghal has very limited hotel capacity — book 6–12 months ahead. Many athletes rent houses or apartments in the area for the weekend.
Related Events
Ironman Cork is the pinnacle of Irish endurance racing. The Hardman Killarney (August) is Ireland's only other full-distance triathlon — a non-Ironman-branded race on the Ring of Kerry. Ironman 70.3 Cork (August) is the natural stepping stone. For long-distance preparation, the Hardman Waterville Half (July) and Celtic Warrior Half Warrior (August) are recommended build races.
