Malahide Friday Night Swim Series

About This Event
The Malahide Friday Night Swim Series is Swim Ireland's flagship open water season opener — four consecutive Friday evening races at Malahide Beach in north Co. Dublin. The 2026 series runs from mid-May to early June, with a 1,200m course each week. It's one of the most accessible open water events in Ireland: close to Dublin, competitively priced, and designed to ease swimmers into the season before the bigger summer events.
Recurring Event
Held annually on Friday evenings in May/June
What to Expect
Each Friday has the same format: registration from 5:30pm, racing at 7pm. The 1,200m course runs along Malahide Beach — a sandy, relatively sheltered stretch in the Dublin Bay area. Sea water temperatures in late May and early June are typically 11–13°C. The races are not handicapped, so faster swimmers will be at the front, but it's not an intimidating atmosphere — there's a mix of seasoned open water racers and people doing their first sea swim.
Wetsuits can be worn but must be declared on entry — wetsuit and non-wetsuit swimmers compete in separate prize categories. This is a Swim Ireland event, so membership is required (club membership, full special membership, or one-day special membership purchased at registration). Spot prizes are awarded each week.
Who It's For
Open to all abilities, but you should be able to swim 1,200m comfortably in open water. There is no shorter distance option. Swim Ireland membership is required — you can purchase one-day special membership on site if you're not already a member. The series is ideal for swimmers building towards longer summer events like Glendalough, the Galway Bay Swim qualifiers, or the Liffey Swim qualification series. First-time open water swimmers with decent pool fitness will find this a supportive entry point.

How to Enter
Pre-registration is online through Swim Ireland. Entry is €10 per swim or €30 for all four nights (the bundle includes a free T-shirt). Online registration is strongly recommended — most events on the Swim Ireland calendar do not accept on-the-day entries. Bookings open in early March 2026. The series does not typically sell out, but registering early guarantees your place.
Getting There
Malahide Beach is in north Co. Dublin, about 20 minutes from Dublin city centre via the M1 or the DART rail line (Malahide station is a 15-minute walk from the beach). Street parking is available along the seafront and in the village — arrive by 5:30pm to secure a spot on race evenings. The village has plenty of cafes and restaurants for post-swim food. No overnight accommodation is typically needed — most swimmers are Dublin-based.
Related Events
The Malahide series is the ideal warm-up for the summer open water calendar. The Glendalough Swim (May) takes place around the same time and is a natural next step in freshwater. For sea swimming progression, the Leinster Open Sea series runs weekly races through the summer, building towards the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Swim and the Liffey Swim in September. The Gaelforce Great River Swim (May) is another accessible early-season event.
