What to Expect

The swim in the River Corrib is the highlight — a downstream swim with current assist through Galway city. The water is fresh, clean, and fast-moving, which means your swim time will be quicker than in still water. The bike leg uses roads around the University of Galway campus and surrounding areas. The run follows riverside paths and city streets. Chip timing with full splits is provided for all finishers. The event has a Try-a-Tri option and an Aquabike (swim + bike only), making it accessible beyond the standard triathlon format. The atmosphere is competitive for the Intervarsity championships but friendly overall — Galway Triathlon Club runs a well-organised event with a strong volunteer crew. Post-race, Galway city offers plenty of restaurants and pubs within walking distance.

Who It's For

Minimum age is 16 (must turn 16 before 31 December 2026). Triathlon Ireland membership or One Day Membership is required. The Try-a-Tri suits beginners, while the Sprint and Olympic distances attract club-level and competitive triathletes. The Intervarsity championship draws university teams from across Ireland.
