About This Event
The Westport Triathlon is a Triathlon Ireland National Series event held on 15 August 2026 in one of the most scenic towns in the west of Ireland. Offering Olympic distance (1.5km swim / 40km bike / 10km run) and Super Sprint (400m / 20km / 5km), the race features a sea swim in Clew Bay, a bike leg to Croagh Patrick, and a run along the Westport Greenway.
Recurring Event
Held annually in August
What to Expect
The swim is in Clew Bay — a large sheltered Atlantic bay dotted with islands. Water temperature in August is typically 15–17°C. The bike course is an out-and-back to Croagh Patrick (Ireland's holy mountain) — mostly flat with some rolling sections and stunning views across the bay. The run follows the Westport Greenway, a converted railway line that provides a flat, scenic off-road running surface.
Westport Triathlon has a reputation as one of the best-organised and most enjoyable events on the National Series calendar. The town fully embraces the event, and the post-race atmosphere in Westport's famous pubs and restaurants is a highlight. The Super Sprint makes it accessible to first-timers, while the Olympic distance attracts serious National Series competitors.
Who It's For
The Super Sprint (400m swim / 20km bike / 5km run) is beginner-friendly and ideal for a first triathlon. The Olympic distance is for experienced club triathletes competing in the National Series. Triathlon Ireland membership or ODM required. Minimum age follows Triathlon Ireland rules (typically 16 for Super Sprint, 18 for Olympic).
