About This Event
The Gaelforce Great Fjord Swim is the grand finale of the Gaelforce Great Swim Trilogy and one of Ireland's most dramatic open water swimming events. Held annually in Killary Fjord — Ireland's only true fjord — the 2026 edition takes place on 12 September in Leenane, Co. Galway. Four distances from 750m to 8km cater to a wide range of abilities, though this is no casual dip: the Atlantic-fed fjord demands respect, cold-water competence, and honest self-assessment of your swimming ability.
Recurring Event
Held annually in September. Grand finale of the Great Swim Trilogy.
What to Expect
Killary Fjord is a narrow, 16km-long saltwater inlet surrounded by mountains on both sides — the scenery is genuinely world-class. The water in September sits around 12°C, occasionally reaching 14°C in a mild year, but freshwater runoff from recent rainfall can push it lower. Wetsuits are optional, not compulsory — there are separate prize categories for wetsuit and non-wetsuit (skins) swimmers. Skins swimmers must demonstrate prior cold-water training at similar temperatures and distances.
The 750m and 2km distances start from a mussel boat out in the fjord and swim back to shore, which is a unique experience. The 3.9km (Ironman distance) and the new 8km route are looped courses starting from the Killary shore. Tow floats are mandatory for all swimmers in all distances — no exceptions. The safety setup is comprehensive: rescue boats, safety kayakers, and medical teams are positioned along the course. Swimmers who miss cut-off checkpoints are pulled from the water.
Who It's For
Minimum age is 16 (parental consent required for 16–17 year olds). No Swim Ireland membership is required. The 750m is accessible to competent pool swimmers making their first open water attempt, but you should be comfortable in cold water and able to sight-navigate without lane ropes. The 2km and 3.9km distances require genuine open water experience — the organisers state you must be able to swim your chosen distance confidently before race day. The 8km is for experienced marathon swimmers only, with a 4-hour cut-off.

How to Enter
Registration is through the Gaelforce Events booking system at gaelforceevents.com. Entry fees range from €59 (750m early bird) to €160 (8km last chance), plus a €6 booking fee. Early bird pricing closed in November 2025, but standard pricing (€70–€80 for the shorter distances) runs until the end of May 2026. On-the-day entries are available at a premium (€95–€100 for 750m–3.9km) but the 8km does not appear to offer on-the-day registration. The event has not historically sold out instantly, but the 8km is a new addition and capacity is limited.
Getting There
The event is based at Killary Adventure Centre, Leenane, Co. Galway (Eircode H91 PY61). Leenane is roughly 1.5 hours from Galway city via the N59 through Connemara, or about 40 minutes from Westport. Event parking is included in your entry fee. Accommodation in Leenane itself is very limited — Killary Adventure Centre offers a "Stay and Race" package (2 nights B&B + post-event dinner from €112 per person) which is the most convenient option. Otherwise, book early in Clifden (30 min), Westport (40 min), or Letterfrack (20 min) — September accommodation in Connemara fills up fast.
Related Events
The Gaelforce Great Fjord Swim is the third and final leg of the Gaelforce Great Swim Trilogy. The series opens with the Great River Swim on the Shannon in May and continues with the Great Lake Swim on Lough Derg in July. Completing all three earns you the Trilogy finisher medal. If you're building towards the Fjord Swim, the Glendalough Swim (May) and Malahide Friday Night Swim Series are excellent preparation races for open water distance and cold-water acclimatisation.
