Hardman Waterville Half Triathlon
11 July 202607:00 – 16:00Waterville Bay, Waterville, Kerry
About This Event
The Hardman Waterville Half Triathlon is billed as "Ireland's most spectacular half distance" — a 1.9km sea swim, 94km cycle, and 21km run through some of the most dramatic scenery on the Wild Atlantic Way. Held on 11 July 2026 in Waterville, Co. Kerry, the bike course includes the legendary climbs of Coomakista, Ballaghbeama, and Ballaghisheen on the Ring of Kerry. A €10,000 prize fund makes it one of the richest races in Irish triathlon.
Recurring Event
Held annually in July
What to Expect
The 1.9km swim is in Waterville Bay — a sheltered Atlantic inlet with typically calm conditions but cold water (13–15°C in July). The bike leg is where this race earns its reputation: 94km through the Ring of Kerry with three significant mountain climbs. Coomakista (the first climb out of Waterville) is steep and relentless, and Ballaghbeama adds another 300m+ of climbing. The roads are quiet but narrow in places with rough surfaces on some mountain sections.
The 21km run returns to Waterville and follows a mix of road and coastal paths. The finish back in Waterville village is well-supported with crowds. This is a hard race on a hard course — the Hardman name is earned. The scenery is extraordinary, but you need to be fit enough to enjoy it.
Who It's For
This is for experienced half-distance triathletes who are strong cyclists. The bike course elevation (1,500m+) makes it significantly harder than a flat half-iron. You should be comfortable swimming in the Atlantic and capable of riding 94km on hilly terrain before running a half marathon. Triathlon Ireland membership or ODM is required. Not suitable for first-time half-distance athletes unless you have serious cycling experience.

How to Enter
Registration is through hardman.ie (Nifty Entries platform). The €10,000 prize fund attracts a competitive field, and the event has limited capacity. Entry fees vary by registration tier. Register early — the Hardman events have a loyal following and popular distances fill up.
Getting There
Waterville is on the Ring of Kerry in south Co. Kerry — about 4 hours from Dublin and 1.5 hours from Killarney. The village is small and accommodation is limited. Kenmare (45 min), Cahersiveen (30 min), and Killarney (1.5 hours) have more options. Book well in advance — July on the Ring of Kerry is peak tourist season. Race HQ is in Waterville village with parking available locally.
Related Events
The Hardman Waterville is the shorter sibling of the Hardman Killarney full distance (August) — many athletes use Waterville as preparation for the full. Ironman 70.3 Cork (August) is the flat-course alternative for half-distance racing. The Celtic Warrior Multisport Weekend (August) offers a Half Warrior option at Lough Ennell for those who prefer inland courses.
