Mayor's Foyle Challenge

About This Event
The Mayor's Foyle Challenge is a charity open water swim on the River Foyle in Derry, Northern Ireland. The 2026 event on 16 May brings together 180 experienced swimmers across three waves — 1km and 3km distances — raising funds for PIPS Suicide Prevention and the Castlederg Patient Comfort Fund. Organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council with support from Foyle Search and Rescue, it's one of the most community-driven swim events on the island.
What to Expect
The River Foyle is a tidal river, and the event is timed around the tide for safety — exact start times are confirmed closer to the date based on tidal conditions. The course runs between the pontoon at the Council Offices and Prehen Boathouse. The 3km distance is offered in two waves: Wave 1 for experienced swimmers and Wave 2 for intermediate-level swimmers. Wave 3 covers 1km for competent swimmers.
Water temperature in mid-May on the Foyle is typically 10–12°C. The river is wide with moderate current. Safety cover is provided by Foyle Search and Rescue, the Lighthouse Project, and the Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum. The atmosphere is warm and community-focused — this is a charity challenge, not a race.
Who It's For
All participants must have open water swimming experience — this is stated clearly by the organisers. The 1km (Wave 3) suits competent swimmers with some open water background. The 3km waves require genuine experience in cold river or sea conditions. No Swim Ireland or specific membership is required, but a minimum £50 charitable donation is expected from each participant.

How to Enter
Registration is online at derrystrabane.com/mayorsfoylechallenge. The entry requirement is a minimum £50 donation to the event charities. Places are limited to 180 swimmers across all three waves. Additional fundraising beyond the minimum is encouraged. Contact Derry City and Strabane District Council for availability.
Getting There
The event is based along the River Foyle in Derry city. The Council Offices pontoon (start area) is in the city centre, easily accessible on foot. Derry is about 1.5 hours from Belfast via the A6 and 4 hours from Dublin. The city has good hotel and B&B options — the event is on a Saturday, so a weekend stay is practical. Free parking is available at various city centre locations.
Related Events
The Foyle Challenge takes place on the same day as the Gaelforce Great River Swim on the Shannon (16 May) — two river swims on opposite ends of the island. For swimmers in the north looking to build open water experience before the Foyle Challenge, the Malahide Friday Night Swim Series starts around the same time. The Europe Triathlon Cup in Derry (September) is another major event on the Foyle later in the year.
