About This Event
The Swim Ireland Open Water National Championships is the pinnacle of competitive open water racing in Ireland. Held at Lough Key Forest Park in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, the 2026 edition on 26 July features multiple distance categories up to 10km. This is the national selection event for Irish open water representatives — the most competitive open water meet on the domestic calendar and the race where national titles are decided.

What to Expect
Lough Key is a large freshwater lake within a forest park setting — sheltered, scenic, and well-suited to competitive racing. Water temperature in late July is typically 16–18°C, making it one of the warmer events on the open water calendar. The course runs through the lake with turning buoys and is designed for competitive racing rather than recreational participation.
This is a timed, competitive event with strict adherence to Swim Ireland open water racing rules. Expect a focused, serious atmosphere — this is where national titles and international selection places are on the line. Safety cover is comprehensive with rescue boats and kayakers. Wetsuits follow Swim Ireland open water competition rules (typically permitted below certain temperature thresholds).
Who It's For
This is for competitive open water swimmers. Qualifying conditions apply — swimmers must meet criteria outlined in the event conditions, which typically include completing qualifying swims from the Swim Ireland open water calendar during the season. Swim Ireland club competitive membership or full special membership is required. Only two swims from the Malahide series count towards qualification. Age group and senior categories are offered.

Boyle town (5 min) has hotels, B&Bs, and restaurants. Carrick-on-Shannon (20 min) is a larger town with more accommodation options. The event coincides with peak summer season, so book accommodation in advance.
Related Events
The Open Water National Championships cap the competitive open water season. Swimmers typically qualify through the Swim Ireland open water calendar, starting with the Malahide Swim Series (May) and progressing through summer events. For non-competitive open water at a similar time, the Gaelforce Great Lake Swim at Portumna (July) and the Galway Bay Swim (July) offer distance challenges without the qualification barrier.
